South Florida Roads (Miami-Dade and Monroe Counties)

Welcome

Overview:
The Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) District Six is conducting a feasibility study to evaluate an elevated transit alignment along State Road (SR) 968/Flagler Street from Downtown Miami to Florida International University (FIU) to provide direct or intermodal connectivity to the existing transit system.

The purpose of this project is to conduct a Transit Corridor and Project Evaluation (TCPE) Study for a proposed new line or extension of existing Metrorail (Elevated Heavy Rail) or existing Metromover (Elevated Automated People Mover/Automated Guideway Transit). The need for the project can be summarized by constraints from increasing traffic congestion with few options for expanding roadway capacity due to limited right-of-way availability and a built-out urban environment.

Project Objective:
The purpose of this feasibility study is to improve transit travel times and person carrying capacity while addressing the needs of the traveling public and enhancing facilities for pedestrians and bicyclists. Through an evaluation of feasible transit alternatives, this study will consider factors such as costs, community benefits, funding options, transportation improvements, economic development potential, and environmental considerations. The objective is to determine the type of transit investment for implementation that best meets the region’s transit and community goals.

Public Involvement:
Public involvement plays a crucial role in this project by keeping citizens informed about the study. The public will have the opportunity to provide input during two public meetings to be held in the summer and fall of 2026. FDOT encourages public participation without regard to race, color, national origin, age, sex, religion, disability, or family status. FDOT encourages all residents and business owners to contact the identified points of contact for questions or comments on the proposed project.
